Trail fees are not in the price: each runner books a SIMplifica slot. Pickup is included in Funchal, Caniço, Santa Cruz, Machico, Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava.

Prices checked on 25 September 2026. Every price is per car, in euro, for the whole group.

The routes

PR13 Vereda do Fanal. From the Assobiadores stop on the ER209 down to the Fanal laurel forest: 10.8 km, from 1,420 m to 1,130 m. Add PR14 and PR15 to run on to Ribeira da Janela, about 20.7 km in all.

PR17 Pináculo e Folhadal. From Bica da Cana on the Paul da Serra plateau down to Encumeada: up to 15 km, from 1,490 m to 970 m, graded difficult. At our check of 27 September only the line Bica da Cana, Caramujo, Folhadal, Encumeada was passable.

The MIUT east end. Porto da Cruz, Larano, Boca do Risco, Machico: about 15.5 km along the north-east coast, the last stretch of the Madeira Island Ultra Trail course. It isn't a classified PR trail, so there is no trail fee. The next MIUT runs on 24 and 25 April 2027.

PR10 Levada do Furado. From Ribeiro Frio to Portela: 11 km on a flat levada, from 880 m down to 645 m. IFCN reopened it on 14 July 2026.

PR1 with PR1.2. Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo and down to Achada do Teixeira: 6.1 km plus 2.8 km, between 1,491 m and 1,862 m, one way only. The Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo section was closed at our check on 25 September 2026, so we check it again for your date before we confirm.

Out and back. On PR8 at Ponta de São Lourenço and PR9 to Caldeirão Verde, your driver waits at the car park while you run there and back.

How a running day works

The times come from your SIMplifica slot: we count back from it for the pickup, and agree the pickup window at the finish before you set off.

    At a hotel your driver waits at the main entrance, and for a holiday rental in a narrow street we send a map pin the evening before for the nearest point where the car can stop.

  2. At your slot

    Dropped at the start

    Your driver stops at the trailhead. You keep a bag with dry clothes in the car.

  3. While you run

    The drive round

    Your driver drives to the finish car park and waits there. Message on WhatsApp if you're ahead of time or running late.

  4. Inside the agreed window

    Pickup at the finish

    Water, your bag and a seat. Change in the car or at the nearest café.

  5. Afterwards

    Back at your hotel

    Or stop on the way for lunch; tell us where.

Before you run

  • Book your slot. Every classified trail needs a SIMplifica booking, online only. The fee is €4.50 a trail, €9 for a day pass on two or more, and €10.50 for PR1 with PR1.1 and PR1.2. Residents and children aged 12 or under pay nothing but still book.
  • Keep to your slot. The tolerance is about 15 minutes. IFCN refunds only when it closes the trail, not for a missed slot, rain or illness.
  • Check the status. IFCN closes trails for works, fires and races, and entering a closed trail is fined. We look at the IFCN list again the day before.
  • Pack for the mountains. A vest with water, a windproof jacket, and a headlamp for the levada tunnels. Don't run alone, and finish before dark.
  • Insurance. We recommend travel insurance that covers the activities you book with us. Check that yours covers trail running in the mountains.
  • Running guide. A local trail runner can run with you for an extra fee, arranged when you book. Your driver drives and doesn't coach.

Trail running questions

Which trail is best for a first run in Madeira?

PR13 Vereda do Fanal is the easiest to start with: 10.8 km, mostly downhill from 1,420 m to the Fanal forest, and it costs €160 per car for 1 to 4 runners. For a longer day, add PR14 and PR15 to Ribeira da Janela.

Do we need to book the trail?

Yes. Each runner books a SIMplifica slot online for every classified trail, from €4.50. The MIUT east section from Porto da Cruz to Machico is not a classified PR, so it needs no booking.

Can a guide run with us?

Yes, a local trail runner can join for an extra fee, which we tell you when you book. Guided runs on the island usually include route choice, pace and photos.

What if we finish late?

Your driver waits at the finish car park through the window we agree. Message on WhatsApp if you're behind, and we adjust. Time beyond the window is charged at €40 an hour.

Is the PR1 crossing open?

The Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo section was closed at our check on 25 September 2026. We check the IFCN list for your date before we confirm, and offer another route if it's closed.
